Josh Queen Goes Subterranean
Sitting on the back patio of the Meadowlark, enjoying the cool weekend breeze, the music on the speakers switched from jangly, loud beats to a sudden plaintive, haunting voice.
“Who is this?” My companion asked.
I pointed to the doorway to the bar. It sounded like it was coming from the subterranean Meadowlark, a pleasant and cool (both in atmosphere and temperature, given its basement location) watering hole right around the corner from the Larimer Lounge at 2701 Larimer St.
Taking the stage solo, Josh Queen was new to my ears but sounded reminiscent of the singer/songwriters with an acoustic guitar and plaintive vocals that had seen such a boom just a few years ago. It was refreshing to hear the gentleness of his sound in that environment. The first song that caught our ears had the refrain “Maybe I’m better off alone.” A little spooky, but a little true as Josh Queen was strong as a solo player.
He’ll be appearing again at the Thin Man on June 26th, another venue where his acoustic/vocal mix and introspective (but catchy!) songs will have resonance.
