MILO GREENE

Larimer Lounge Presents… MILO GREENE SWEET TOOTH, MEATTOOTH Doors open at 8pm | Show starts at 9pm | .00 In Adv | .00Day Of Show The four voices of Milo Greene weave and blend into onevoice, creating songs that live and breathe simultaneously as many and as one, with the breadth of an omniscient, collective consciousness. These melodies invoke long drives down the California coast, and the feeling of leaving home. There is something meditative about it, as though it asks to be listened to alone and given one’s full attention. The lyrics are vague enough to be questioned, yet specific enoughto conjure certain smells, tastes and feelings, the idea of an intimate moment and the implicit sadness present in all things simply beautiful. Guitar lines swell and recede as ocean waves would. A slight dissonance can be sensed underneath a seemingly passive exterior; a tension can be found in passing tones that invoke jazz harmony and the sense of waiting for something really big to happen, a sense of growinginevitably older while grasping at the threads of youth. It is the perspective of someone looking back on life or lost love, of standing ona mountaintop overlooking a vast landscape. There is the sense that everything becomes clearer at a distance, less emotionally tumultuousand perhaps more meaningful. When the songs reach their closing, thelistener is like a dreamer waking from a dream that can only vaguely be remembered.

TOM HAGERMAN (OF DeVotchKa) CD RELEASE

Westword, KGNU, Radio1190, and T&S Present… TOM HAGERMAN (OF DeVotchKa) CD RELEASE JOE SAMPSON Doors open at 8pm | Show starts at 9pm | .00 In Adv | .00 Day Of Show Tom Hagerman is best known for his multi-instrumentalist role in the genre-defying band DeVotchKa, and for performing on recordings by M Ward, Crooked Fingers, She and Him, Micah P. Hinson, Bettye Lavette, Mercury Rev, Amos Lee and Sage Francis, among others. In the world of film, Tom provided score contributions both with DeVotchKa in “Little Miss Sunshine”and more recently on Calexico’s score for “The Guard” and Zooey Deschanel’s songs in “Winnie the Pooh.” Tom started playing music at age 7.He stumbled his way through his teenage years playing in various public school orchestras and regional youth symphonies before winding up in Boulder to study violin at the University of Colorado. During his time at the University, he found himself playing bass guitar in a gothband while landing himself a 10 week summer stint in an orchestra at the decidedly un-goth Disney World in Florida. “I can vividly recall playing in the orchestra accompanying Toni Tennille on her hit song “Love Will Keep us Together” all the while hearing Joy Division’s “Love will Tear Us Apart” in my head.” Excluding a year as a bike messenger inNew York City, Tom Hagerman has been a member of DeVotchKa since 1997 and also a member of the currently slumbering seminal Denver band, the Denver.

THE SUPERVILLIANS

Larimer Lounge Presents… THE SUPERVILLIANS SKA SHANK REDEMPTION HATRICK PENRY Doors open at 8pm | Show starts at 9pm | .00 In Adv | .00 Day Of Hailing from sub-tropical Orlando FL, theSupervillains showcase their love of reggae music while blending the sweet southern vocal harmonies of band co-founders Dominic Maresco (drums) and Scott “Skart” Suldo (guitars) with huge, ground-moving bass lines provided by bassist Daniel Grundorf. Furious instrumental solos and keyboard melodies from Tom “T-Rex” Moulton compliment the combo’s penchant for formulating unique arrangements, drawing from a wide range of obvious influences. Their set-list keeps the listener on their feet as the band bounces around from up-tempo ska, roots reggae, rockhooks, and shout-along choruses with subject matter that pretty muchcovers the bases: women and partying. The Supervillains were established by Maresco and Suldo as a sign-of-the-times ska/punk band while they were still in high school, but soon found themselves gravitating more and more to the reggae side of the coin after over a dozen trips tothe US Virgin Islands. After a couple early-album successes, they were signed to LAW Records (owned by Hawaiian reggae act, Pepper) for their first national release “Grow Yer Own” (2006) and the subsequent breakout “Massive” (2008). Taking their high-octane “anything-goes” live show on the road, they have gained nationwide attention and respectby pounding out 200+ shows a year since signing with LAW. Casting a wide net, their musical versatility has opened the door to over a dozen assorted fully-national tours with some of the nation’s most distinguished acts. They have supported reggae tours (The Wailers, Inner Circle), reggae-rock tours (Slightly Stoopid, Pepper), ska tours (ReelBig Fish, Streetlight Manifesto), punk tours (Pennywise, AuthorityZero), rock legends (Fishbone, English Beat), major festivals (Wakarusa, 311 PowWow), and have twice been on the east-coast leg of theJagermeister MusicTour. The band has recently made the jump to headlining their own national tours with promising results. In Feb 2011, the Supervillains released “Postcards from Paradise”, their fifth full-length studio album and first to appear on the band’s own imprint, Rah Rah Rah Records. They teamed up with rock producer Brett Hestla (Framing Handley, Virgos Merlot) to craft an album that is straight to the point, capitalizing on the band’s knack for writing honest, relatable songs and highlighting the unit’s growth and musicianship. “Postcards” is a 14-song, 50-minute time-bomb that comes at you from multiple angles; culminating with the monster title-track, representing a fresh take for a band that has constantly evolved its sound from the beginning. The band’s fanbase agreed, with the album debuting at No. 1on Billboard’s Reggae charts. After supporting the record nationalllywith Florida pals Less Than Jake, the band went back into Brett Hestla’s studio and have recently finished up work on a 6-song EP titled “Robots”. Slated for an early spring release, it’s a fast-paced conceptrecord that will give fans plenty to chew on while the band works onits next full-legth album.

THE REAL McKENZIES

Radio 1190 and Twist & Shout Present… THE REAL McKENZIES CIVET POTATO PIRATES Doors open at 8pm | Show starts at 9pm | .00 In Adv | .00 Day Of Show Paul McKenzie claims he had a epiphanywhen he was subjected to an Andy Stewart record which was playing in one room, and intertwining with the vulgarity of a Sex Pistols album emerging from another. That year was somewhere around 1992, the setting was Vancouver Canada, and McKenzie was looking for something new, since his band TT Racer had recently disbanded. Who would have thoughtthat a great deal of fun could be had pilfering your parents closet ofold kilts and high socks to wear on a stage on which you would perform cover songs of various bands, altered slightly, to fit a scottishtheme. Example: I Wanna Be Your Scot as opposed to I Wanna Be Your Dog. You get the point. Someone probably joked, If were gonna wear kilts, we might as well have a piper too. While certainly not a new anglein rock music, the bagpipes were only ever used in a couple of songsat most by various bands, never a mainstay of an entire set. Soon though, it was apparent that this was a distinctive sound that could befinely tuned, with the soaring pipes complimenting the ferocious electric guitars and vise-versa. Of course the first thing that springs tomind is the word gimmick. Sure, I guess thats applicable here. But before you go taking things way to seriously, lets also not forget theconcept of show buisness. People annually spend a shitload of money for the sole purpose of being entertained. So why not go out of your way to be entertainment? That was all a moot point with the McKenzies anyway. Because they just wanted to have fun, and you are more than welcome to have fun with them, as hundereds of thousands have. Sure somewill read too much meaning into the whole idea, and take it out of its realm of fun, and those people should just shut the fuck up and drink their beer. 14 years later, the Real McKenzies have achieved lengendary status. Their live shows are highly regarded and they have beenknown to leave large audiences choking on their own dry mouths. They’ve been influence to more than a few bands, and ironically have beenaccused of ripping those same bands off, usually by journalistic hacks on the internet. They’ve toured the world endlessly, and frightenedmore than a few people at times, but its a small percentage to the numbers of people who leave their shows with ear to ear grins and thinkabout the great time they had for weeks to come. I can imagine it will take death to stop these guys from doing what they do best, and that’s kicking your ass in the face at each and every show they play.
