I was vaguely uncomfortable the first time I saw Nashville Pussy on stage:  Not because of the raucous sexuality of the lyrics and stage actions or even the sticky sweatiness of the increasingly tight crowd around me, but rather the strange sort of inbreeding family dynamic thing that seemed to be happening between the band themselves.

It was like watching the family from Rob Zombie’s horror flick “House of 1000 Corpses” or “Devil’s Rejects.”

It took me a while, but I began to enjoy the crazy Southern hard-rock throw-back style show as much as I enjoy the flick:  For the sheer bizarre power they have to ROCK.

Nashville Pussy will be back to put some hard, Southern-tinged rock and roll into my soul this Saturday at the Larimer Lounge.

Vans Warped Tour 08 Denver photos
In chronological order
First band: Every Time I Die
[miscellaneous photos]
Second Band: As I Lay Dying

I got to hang out with the guys from Every Time I Die, and let me say they’re very cool, very down to earth, and very chill. It was a pleasure to meet them and be on stage for their set. BTW, they played searing, tight numbers; I could not easily concentrate on my photography.

Many thanks to Kris for the VWT pass (via Jordan Buckley).

It\’s Rainin Men

The crowd at Civic Center filled up the entire park, with people packed in as far as the eye could see.

And yet, when Ms. Wash, the incomprable club diva, took the stage, everyone still had space to dance.

For PrideFest this last weekend, The Queen of Clubland was the perfect choice.   Free events and free concerts are a great way to catch some of the unexpected or legendary acts of the past that now make the festival circuts.  The Civic Center seems to have an offering of these sorts of shows on any given weekend.

Best known for her hit “It’s Raining Men” with the Weathergirls (you know it’ll be stuck in your head now) and the vocal “Everybody Dance Now!”  in the C&C Music Factory Song (she sued over illegal use of her voice in that song, by the by…)  it’s great to see an icon.

Plus she looked amazing.

Not the usual hipster rock, but for a free festival, damn it was fun.  And I haven’t stopped singing “It’s Raining Men” since.  I need a new song stuck in my head.

Want to know about the latest, greatest talent that’s simmering in the Denver underground?  At the Denver Post Underground Music Showcase Leadup Series, you’ll get the chance to hear some of the hippest bands and have the unique priviliedge of being one of the early adopters to these up-and-coming bands.

The details:

8pm at The Falcon, (3295 S Broadway) with a 6.00 cover.  Bands include Sleeper Horse w/ Raleigh, Killfix, and b.sous.

There’s something refreshing about the Old Curtis St. tavern’s ancient look and dark interior.

So where better to hear some local music? Lineup looks like this:

9:45-DANG!
10:30-Missing DuFrenes (US!)
11:15- The Bluebird Equation

Make is a late night of sound!

atmountzoomer.jpgWolf Parade released At Mount Zoomer yesterday.

Wolf Parade’s debut (Fall 2005 release) was the fine Apologies to the Queen Mary, and that pretty much rocked my socks. I’m about halfway thru Zoomer as we speak, and I’ll drop my opinions of it here later this week.

Today must be an open mic sort of day.

The Mercury Cafe will  be featuring its Weds. night Open Stage event, where musicians, magicians, and other stage acts can sign up to take a spot in the spotlight starting at 8pm at the cafe, located at 2199 California.

Go forth, you talented folk of town!

I’d imagine being an open mic regular would sometimes be a frustrating gig.

None of the glory of possibly more mediocre bands or singer/songwriters, struggling to fit into a time slot that might just be crunched into a couple minutes, and dealing with impassive crowds more at the venue to eat chicken wings than listen to your heartfelt songs.

Rejoice, all you open mic’ers of passion and talent!  Your day in the sun might be here.

Open Air Denver will be hosting the Open Air Denver Open Mic Event on June 13th-15th at Denver’s Skyline Park along the 16th Street Mall.

Featuring 50 musicians and bands recruited from open mics all around the area, Open Air Denver is hoping to highlight the talent available across mics in the Denver region.
